Emergency Shelter - Safe House

The Safe House is a short-term residential facility for women and their children seeking confidential refuge from an unsafe living situation. Located in a Colonial-style home in a quiet residential setting, the Safe House has 5 private bedrooms, a comfortable living area and a common kitchen as well as a playroom for children and private offices for counseling services. There is also a fenced-in back yard where the children can play.

During residency (up to 60 days) women and their children are provided counseling services and intensive case management which includes, but is not limited to:

  • social services,
  • housing,
  • continuing education,
  • employment readiness,
  • other additional services to guide the resident toward becoming independent.

Individual and group counseling services are available for both women and their children.

The Safe House environment is violence-free and offers professional as well as peer support to victims of abuse with the goal of continuing the dynamic of a non-violent life style following their residency.

Transitional Housing

The Transitional Housing program is designed to help women and their children bridge the gap between their time at the Safe House and living independently. We currently have two transitional housing locations in Somerset County that can each accommodate four families.

During residency (up to 2 years) women and their children receive in-home case management and counseling services on a bi-weekly basis. The Transitional Housing Program is designed for women who have established a relative sense of independence through employment and/or enrollment in educational classes. The Case Managers and Counselors assist residents in staying on task with identified goals that increase their independence and self sufficiency.

A monetary donation is expected for the Transitional Program that includes responsibility for utilities. The monetary donation is adjusted or waived depending on the resident’s month to month circumstances. These decisions are made in collaboration with the resident.
